Startup adds quantum dots to multi-junction solar cells

Quantum dot layers could yield a 38 percent efficient cell for space satellite applications, according to Canadian firm Cyrium.

Early-stage III-V solar cell company Cyrium Technologies is using InAs/GaAs quantum dot layers to convert light into electricity more efficiently than existing multi-junction devices.

Within the quantum dot layer of Cyrium s cells, the effective bandgap can be tuned to absorb light from 885 to about 1350 nm. This coincides with the region of the spectrum in which light is least effectively absorbed by current triple-junction devices.
