Price erosion forces VPEC out of LEDs

The foundry will focus on wireless and solar markets after selling its AlGaInP emitter business to Crystal Light Optotech.

Taiwanese III-V epiwafer supplier Visual Photonics Epitaxy Co. is leaving the LED supply chain as fierce competition and global recession impact the sector's pricing.

VPEC will cease operations in its LED business on January 15 and sell affected process equipment and LED patents to Crystal Light Optotech.

“We have sold the business in order to enhance our company profitability and focus our resources on our core products in microelectronics and solar cells,” a company spokesperson said. “This will increase profitability and enhance our competitiveness.”
