Osram LEDs Arch South Africa World Cup 2010
Osram will provide their LED lighting to all ten soccer stadiums in the Soccer World Cup and Dragon Plus LEDs in “The Arch” will be the highlight.
Osram will provide floodlights, indoor and outdoor lighting and lighting for catering establishments and illumination of parking lots. The firm are also supplying high-intensity discharge lamps and fluorescent lamps apart from the LEDs.
Of all the components Osram will be supplying to South Africa, the LED-illuminated arc known as "The Arch" will be the highlight, featuring over 12,000 Golden DRAGON Plus LEDs and spanning the entire Durban stadium.
A total of 350 meters long, 2,600 metric tonnes in weight and 30 stories high, The Arch will be visible from afar. It symbolizes the unification of some 70,000 sports lovers in Durban's stadium. And it is here that the German team's first match is to be held. The illumination will be provided by "LED Beams" which OSRAM developed in collaboration with the local manufacturer BEKA especially to meet the demands of the stadium.
Just under two meters in length, they are weather-proof and can be used flexibly. The installation and maintenance of the lighting components are carried out from a chamber inside The Arch.
"Accentuating this exceptionally imposing structure with our LEDs was a great challenge," explained Florian Hockel, the applications engineer responsible for this project. "The impressive result is sure to thrill thousands of visitors."
