Vixar Receives Grant for Red VCSEL Array

Vixar, a manufacturer of III-V based red (650-680nm) and near infra-red (760-800nm) Vertical Cavity Service Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) has been awarded by the NIH.

The Minneapolis based firm has been awarded a Phase II SBIR grant to develop a large red VCSEL array assembly for the readout of images in computed radiography systems by the National Institutes of Health.

Vixar will collaborate with a number of manufacturers of computed radiography systems in order to evaluate the potential of the technology.

“Reducing the size, increasing the resolution and reliability of Computer Radiography have been key drivers for potential customers interested in the technology”, commented Bill Hogan, Director of Product Development at Vixar.

The Company is also pursuing wafer scale packaging approaches for combining laser arrays with cost-effective packaging and lensing solutions.

Vixar designs and manufactures high performance, cost-effective VCSEL products (the majority based on GaAs, AlGaAs, GaP and InGaP) in the wavelength range from 650nm to 900nm. VCSEL based components and subassemblies are increasingly becoming the lasers of choice for sensor and device applications within the biomedical, industrial, office product, military, automotive and consumer industries.

VCSELs benefits to users include miniaturized cost-effective platforms, performance equal or better to edge emitters and lowest available power consumption.
