Praxair & Bridgelux Venture Forth with Joint LED Operations

Praxair will provide ammonia and high-purity hydrogen to Bridgelux in the manufacture of Gallium Nitride (GaN) crystals for LED-based light sources.

Praxair Electronics has been selected by Bridgelux to supply its advanced technology Light-Emitting Diode (LED) design and manufacturing center in Livermore, California with ammonia and high-purity hydrogen.

Bridgelux is a worldwide developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technologies and products.

Ammonia and high-purity hydrogen are critical raw materials in the growth of the near-perfect Gallium Nitride (GaN) crystals that comprise the semiconducting portion of LED-based light sources.

Praxair has installed its advanced ammonia-delivery system, equipped with the highly reliable SureFlow control technology and a patented heat-control design, at Bridgelux’s Livermore facility.

Bridgelux selected Praxair’s 10-metric-ton ISO container, configured for vapor-phase delivery of the ammonia, which is inherently safer to operate than liquid draw systems. The high-capacity bulk system is reported to be capable of delivering sustained ammonia flow rates over 2,000 standard liters per minute, with a peak flow capacity over 3,000 standard liters per minute.

Praxair’s system features full equipment monitoring to ensure reliable process control and eliminates the need for a large number of cylinder change-outs, which reduces costs and improves safety and reliability.

“Praxair has been an important partner in the expansion of Bridgelux’s manufacturing operations,” said Mike Peanasky, Bridgelux VP of Manufacturing. “As Bridgelux continues to drive product performance and technical innovation in solid-state lighting, the high-quality Praxair products are instrumental to those efforts.”

“Repeat selection by Bridgelux of our high-purity ammonia and gas delivery technologies, and Bridgelux’s adoption of our high-purity hydrogen system, underscores Praxair’s position as a premier supplier to the LED and electronics market,” said Mark Murphy, President of Praxair Electronics.
