Cree Sponsors Virtual Symposium Event 'Lighting and System Design'

Other sponsors of the event, created to educate designers on advances in lighting technologies, in particular LEDs, include Osram Opto Semiconductors, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments.

EE Times Group, a source of essential business and technical information for the electronics industry, will present the Digi-Key Virtual Symposium "Lighting and System Design".

The event will take place on Thursday, August 26, 2010 from 11:00 AM through 6:00 PM EDT. The virtual event was created to educate designers on the advances in LED lighting technologies.

"One of the hottest technologies today is LED lighting. That's because the advances made over the last few years are 'light years' ahead of the incumbent technology. The LED lighting industry understands the importance of energy saving and green technologies," said David Blaza, VP, Events of EE Times Group.

"The down side to having technology move at such a rapid pace is that it's difficult to stay on top of the latest products, the technologies, the applications. For just that reason, this virtual symposium will provide anyone interested in LED lighting technology with the key information they need to achieve success."

The symposium is targeted to students, academia professionals and hobbyists, experienced design engineers and procurement specialists.

John Donovan, Editor/Publisher of Low Power Design, Patrick Mannion, Editorial Director, Design & products, EE Times Group and Bolaji Ojo, Business Editor of EE Times Group will serve as the virtual conference's co-chairs.

The keynote "Next Generation Lighting: HB LED Market Review" will be presented by Vrinda Bhandarkar, Senior Market Research Analyst, Strategies Unlimited.

The presentation will review the trends in the HB LED industry over the past ten years and market developments in 2009 for HB LED applications including lighting as well as the five year market forecast for the different application areas will be presented.

The virtual event tracks and sessions include: Today's Lighting Technologies; Lighting the Future; Solve My Lighting Problems: Ask the Experts; and Procurement Issues.

In addition, the event will offer a series of scheduled chats to round out the technical program. Three chats will be presented over the course of the event day. The final roster of chats will be selected by attendees within the event environment during the live event day. Prospective chat topics include:

--  Procurement/allocation problems:  Your design team has created a hot       new product your marketing team thinks will be wildly successful but the critical MCU they spec'ed is on allocation. What are your options short of a redesign?

--  Why I should/shouldn't wait for the next generation: Every next-generation semiconductor device is smaller/faster/cheaper and has more bells and whistles than the previous one. Should you hold off on your next design until you can sample the next generation or go to market now with the current device and do a fancier follow-on product later?

--  How much can I lean on my distributor?:  Distis have long since       morphed from being just parts suppliers to a major source of tech support, but their FAEs are as overworked as the vendors'. To what extent can you lean on them for help when you need it-and what's the best strategy for obtaining help short of leaning on them?

--  Where are the real cost savings associated with lighting?: Saving money by buying a cheaper lighting source is only one piece of the puzzle; you also need to take into account the complexity of powering it, the effect on battery life and potential BOM cost reduction. What are the potential sources of cost savings associated with different lighting choices and how important are they relative to one another?

The Exhibit Floor will showcase technical solutions from Digi-Key, event sponsor; Cree, platinum sponsor; Osram Opto Semiconductors, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments, gold sponsors; and Diodes, MicroChip and Tyco Electronics, silver sponsors.

The event will also provide direct access to a range of data sheets, training materials and more. Additionally, the technical program will be supported by a "Content Pavilion" on the show floor, housing a rich compendium of available content and resources from UBM TechInsights and the platinum and gold event sponsors, including archived webinars, technical papers, design articles and teardowns.
