TSMC to announce construction of thin-film solar cell factory.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, to hold ceremony on Sept. 16 at the Central Taiwan Science Park to announce construction of its thin-film solar cell factory.
TSMC plans to invest as much as US$280 million in the construction this year while industry executives estimated the factory will cost a total of US$1 billion or so in investment.
Construction will begin by the end of this year and production lines on stream in the second half of next year.
In mid-June this year, TSMC and Stion co-announced the cooperation deal, in which TSMC acquired a 21% stake in Stion for US$50 million in exchange for the company`s licensing of copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) solar cell technology.
