Oclaro’s 1470nm LDs Look Good for Your Skin

The InP based single-emitter laser diodes (LDs) are targeted at the cosmetic skin treatment market and are claimed to be cost-effective, reliable and suitable for high-volume manufacturing.

Oclaro, a provider of optical communications and lasers, has announced that its 1470nm laser diodes (LDs), which are successful in the eye-safe laser market, are now being targeted at the high-volume skin treatment consumer market.

The high-power 1470nm single-emitter LDs, which are being showcased at the Photonics West show this week, deliver the power, reliability and stability necessary in the cosmetic consumer market to lower prices.

"Oclaro continues to execute on its business strategy to bring proven technology into new high-growth markets that need the economies of scale and expertise that Oclaro can provide," said Yves Le Maitre, Executive VP and Division Manager at Oclaro. "Our extensive manufacturing infrastructure enables us to bring cutting-edge laser technology into the hands of consumers, and lasers for cosmetic skin treatment is just one example of the types of markets we can now effectively serve."

New consumer applications in the cosmetic skin treatment market, such as wrinkle reduction, are driving increased demand for cost-effective laser diode solutions.  Oclaro has developed its Indium Phosphide (InP) telecom technology into 1470nm single LDs suitable for this application. The firm now delivers the right product set which it says can be scaled to volume quickly to meet the price points that are required to be successful in this market.

The 1470nm single-emitter laser diodes leverage Oclaro technology that is currently being used in eye-safe applications in the defense, materials processing and medical markets.

The laser diode emits 2W output power at 1470nm from a 90 micron stripe and is available on a submount, a CMount or in a 105 micron fiber coupled configuration. The fiber coupled version is built on the firm's platform for single emitter fiber laser pump modules. This configuration can be tailored with fast and slow axis lenses for beam confinement to address specific high-volume consumer applications. The LDs are also reliable, having lasted for more than 5000 hours operating at 10.5A.
