CS Europe off to a great start

Insights from market analysts, details of the inroads of III-Vs into silicon CMOS and advances in LEDs, abatement and foundry services all featured on the opening day of CS Europe

Over 200 delegates flocked to Frankfurt for CS Europe 2012, which kicked off on Monday 12th March. Asif Anwar from the market analysts Strategy Analytics provided the opening presentation, which gave an overall description of the major markets. The good news: Growth on all major sectors can be expected throughout the decade. More detail in the LED light bulb market was provided by Philip Smallwood from IMS Research. He forecasts LEDs to be the dominant technology in the lighting market by 2020. By then the incandescent will be a dying breed. Insights into the wide bandgap market came from Philippe Roussel, who revealed that all the big players in the power electronics market are investigating either GaN or SiC devices. He believes that GaN-based devices are suited to voltages of up to 900 V, and beyond that voltage SiC is a more promising material for making power devices. Following these market presentations, the likes of Matt Caymax from imec, Sanjay Raman from DARPA and Peide Ye from Purdue University detailed efforts to bring the strengths of the III-V to silicon CMOS. After lunch, delegates were treated to talks from some of the biggest companies in the compound semiconductor industry, such as WIN Semiconductors, RFMD and Cree. Networking continued into the evening, with drinks and dinner against the backdrop of a jazz band. A full report of the conference will follow in the April & May issue of Compound Semiconductor.
