GaN Systems veteran taken on PEIC Board

Julian Styles is one of three experts joining the PEIC to drive the development of power electronics
Julian Styles, Director of Business Development USA at GaN Systems, has been elected to the Board of the Power Electronics Industry Collaborative (PEIC). He will concentrate on the area of Membership Recruitment.

GaN Systems is a developer of gallium nitride power switching semiconductors.

Also jumping on Board at PEIC are John N. Hryn, Senior Advisor for Program Development at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)  and J. Fred Buether, who concentrates on New Business Market Development at Dow Corning Electronics.

Hyrn will tackle the area of Workforce Development, and Buether will focus on Membership Recruitment.

PEIC is a US industry consortium of suppliers, OEMS, stakeholders and research companies committed to accelerating development and growth of power electronics in the US. The organisation's aim is to increase investment in manufacturing capabilities and advance innovation in power electronics in the US as energy efficiency becomes ever more important globally.

“We are thrilled that GaN Systems has joined PEIC’s Board of Directors,” says PEIC Board President, Mark Bellinger. “Julian’s expertise is extremely valuable and he will certainly be a great addition to the Board.”

GaN Systems has developed a range of gallium nitride power switching products based on its proprietary Island Technology. The company’s devices are claimed to overcome the limitations of traditional silicon semiconductors, offering far greater efficiency in power conversion applications such as solar, wind, smart-grid, electric and hybrid vehicles and power supply applications. GaN Systems has recently announced its products will be widely commercially available this year.

Styles comments, “Innovative semiconductor companies like GaN Systems succeed best when they are part of a thriving power electronics ecosystem. We are very impressed with PEIC’s efforts to build and strengthen this ecosystem in the USA, and are delighted to be able to get involved.”

Julian Styles has a twenty-five year record of working with innovative technologies in the USA, Europe and worldwide. As a technology consultant in Europe, he helped develop the technology behind digital cellphones, electric vehicle grid integration, and digital audio broadcast. He established and led the automotive multimedia team at Pi Group in the UK, which specialises in the integration  of personal digital devices, heads-up displays, MP3s and proximity sensing into vehicle interiors.

Since moving to the USA in 2007, he helped spearhead the use of rapid development tools in areas such as advanced emissions control and active suspension, as well as the rollout of Movimento’s innovative vehicle knowledge management systems. He joined GaN Systems in 2012, where he is responsible for introducing the company’s advanced gallium nitride power semiconductors to the US market. Styles is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and Ashridge Business School.

John N. Hryn is a principal process development engineer at ANL and has extensive experience in process technology development and the scale-up of innovative technologies. He also serves as Senior Advisor for Program Development at Argonne.

Hyrn earned his Ph.D. in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the University of Toronto, and has over twenty years of experience in applied research and development. A holder of six US patents and over fifty publications, he currently focuses on developing energy-efficient manufacturing and nanomanufacturing technologies, and supports Argonne’s program in Power Electronics.
