California-based GaN-on-diamond specialist wins funding to ramp technology for AI data centre, space, and defence markets

Akash Systems, a California-based GaN-on-diamond semiconductor specialist, has signed a preliminary memorandum with the US Department of Commerce to receive over $68 million in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act .

This proposed funding would provide Akash Systems significant support for its technology ramp-up in AI data centre, space, and defence markets.

In the fast growing AI industry, efficient thermal management is critical. By reducing a GPU’s hot spot temperature by 10-20 degC, Akash's technology can save data centre operators with hundreds of servers millions of dollars in cooling costs, according to the company.

Beyond terrestrial applications, Akash Systems' GaN-on-Diamond technology is being used to produce satellite radios and power amplifiers that offer faster data rates, size reductions and robust performance in the challenging conditions of space.‍

“This proposed funding is an important milestone for Akash Systems and for innovative US technology,” said Felix Ejeckam, co-founder and CEO. “As a US company developing next-generation semiconductor technology, this validates our vision and strategy, helping us to deliver cutting-edge solutions that address thermal challenges in today’s high-performance compute and communication systems. We’re excited to drive this advancement forward for the industry and for the future of American technology.”

Akash has previously received Seed and Series A funding from leading venture capital firms, including Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, and Kearny Jackson, underscoring industry confidence in its technologies and growth potential.
