Tegal Receives Multiple System Reorder From Taiwan for Telecom Application

Orders Establish Tegal as Etching Standard for Gallium Arsenide Semiconductors For Wireless Applications

December 29, 1999

PETALUMA, Calif. Tegal Corporation (Nasdaq: TGAL) today announced that a major Taiwanese telecom chip producer has placed a follow-on order for multiple Tegal 901G diode plasma etchers. The tools will be used for etching high performance gallium arsenide (GaAs) devices widely used in cellular phones and other wireless communication products. The multiple system order is the second that this company has placed with Tegal in the past year.

"Tegal has drawn from over fifteen years experience to produce specialized solutions for gallium arsenide chip production," said Jim McKibben, VP worldwide marketing and sales. "A repeat order for multiple systems from this GaAs producer is proof of Tegal s abilities to supply the market with the most flexible and robust etching system available for GaAs substrates."

The Tegal 901G is specially configured for GaAs processing. Working in conjunction with two previously purchased 901G systems, these new systems will enable the Taiwan based customer to significantly expand its production capacity for these new and growing GaAs wireless applications. Consumer applications for gallium arsenide are predicted to continue growing rapidly. Wireless Subscriber Outlook 1998 predicts that wireless business telephone sales will increase from $203 million in 1998 to almost $1 billion by 2003. The worldwide wireless market is expected to reach approximately 800 million subscribers by the year 2002, according to the same study. Especially rapid growth is predicted in Asia where wireless telecommunication solutions are preferred by consumers and businesses.

Tegal s 900 series systems are widely recognized for their low cost of ownership and high-throughput. More than 1,300 of the 900 Series systems have been installed around the world and are supported by an extensive worldwide parts and service organization.
