Nitres Develops Record High Efficiency Light Emitter

Westlake Village, CA. Nitres reports that it has developed a near-UV/violet InGaN light emitter diode (LED) with 20% quantum efficiency as illustrated in Figure 1. This is the highest external quantum efficiency ever reported for an LED in the UV-to-blue portion of the wavelength spectrum. The LED emits at 405 nm and has a power output of 12 mW at 20 mA drive current.

LEDs in the UV and near UV spectrum are particularly important for making white solid state light bulbs using phosphors to down convert the wavelength of the light emitter to the visible spectrum, then color mix to make a white bulb. High quantum efficiency is critical to making energy efficient solid state light bulbs. The Nitres light emitter has overall (wall plug) efficiency of 12%. "This technology has the potential to revolutionize the lighting industry by enabling solid state light bulbs with high efficiency and 5 to 10 year lifetimes," says Fred A. Blum, CEO. "Such solid state bulbs potentially will have efficiencies which are 2 to 3 times greater than incandescent bulbs." Nitres is working on improvements to this light emitter and shifting to this performance level to even shorter wavelengths below 400 nm. At these wavelengths, the light emitter better matches typical phosphor absorption bands.

Nitres is a development stage, private company which specializes in semiconductor light emitter products for lighting, displays, and traffic signal applications. The Company is a leader in the development of semiconductor devices such as solid state lamps, microwave power transistors, and ultraviolet photodetectors made from gallium nitride based materials.
