RF Micro Devices Creates High-Efficiency Amplifier for Handheld Systems
Greensboro, NC. RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, has eveloped the RF2172 -- a 3.6V, 250mW amplifier with analog gain control for 900MHz ISM band usage.
The RF2172 is a medium-power, high-efficiency amplifier IC targeting a variety of handheld systems including 3.6V spread spectrum cordless phones, 902MHz to 928MHz ISM band systems and portable battery-powered equipment in both commercial and consumer applications.
Manufactured with an advanced GaAs HBT (gallium arsenide heterojunction bipolar transistor) process, the RF2172 has been engineered for use as the final RF amplifier in frequency hopping/direct sequence spread spectrum cordless telephones or other applications in the 902MHz to 928MHz ISM band.
The device has been designed with 0dB to 28dB variable gain with analog control to optimize transmit power, while maximizing battery life in portable equipment that requires up to 100mW transmit power at the transmit port. In addition, the RF2172 features 24dBm typical output power, 58% efficiency at maximum output and an on-board power down mode.
Packaged in a compact 4mmx4mm LCC, the RF2172 is available for immediate shipment at $1.27 per unit in order quantities of 10,000.
