QUALCOMM and Ericsson Develop Bluetooth CDMA Solutions

Industry Leaders to Create Optimized, Most Complete Digital Wireless Solution, Enabling an Entire New Class of Mobile Voice and Data Devices

SAN DIEGO. QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and Ericsson Microelectronics (division of ERICSSON, Nasdaq: ERICY), the leading provider of Bluetooth component solutions, today announced an agreement to jointly develop and market the world s first wireless technology solution supporting both the Bluetooth standard and the CDMA digital wireless standard.

"The true promise of wireless technology lies in its ability to expand the potential of personal appliances. This has been the driving force behind Ericsson s work in pioneering the Bluetooth technology," said Bo Andersson, vice president and general manager of Ericsson Microelectronics. "QUALCOMM s expertise in providing tightly integrated CDMA technology solutions makes them a perfect partner to realize the full promise of Bluetooth for existing and future wireless markets."

"Ericsson Microelectronics expertise and leadership in providing component solutions for Bluetooth applications, combined with our proven experience in developing CDMA chipset and software solutions allow us to rapidly enable our customers to create new products combining these technologies," said Johan Lodenius, senior vice president of marketing and product management, QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "Together, we will drive to expand the number of applications possible by tightly integrating Bluetooth with CDMA technology."

Under the agreement, Ericsson Microelectronics will develop a Bluetooth-compatible radio unit and QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies will develop the Bluetooth digital baseband processing to be integrated into its future Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and software solutions. The companies will work together to optimize the RF and digital designs for operation within a CDMA handset environment to create the most complete and high-performance solution available for CDMA based wireless data applications. Ericsson Microelectronics and QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies will jointly promote the integrated solution to handset and mobile device manufacturing companies.

Bluetooth is a short-range radio technology developed by a special interest group founded by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba. The technology aims to remove the limits of digital equipment interconnectivity by eliminating the need for wired connections. The industry effort seeks to establish a standard to ensure that a majority of the most common computing and telecommunications equipment can talk to each other simply.

This highly integrated design solution will connect end users to a new world of unimagined benefits. The range of possible applications is unlimited, such as the ability for an end user to walk into his or her office, have the handset easily update the schedule and phonebook to synchronize to the PC, or on a business trip, take a picture with a digital camera and send it to the office via the handset. Another example is the same handset could be used as an intercom in the office, as a cellular phone on the move and as a cordless handset in your home. Moreover, the end user will be able to exchange electronic business cards, unlock your car or set up radio preference. High-capacity, high data-rate capable CDMA networks will deliver wide area voice and Internet services to the Bluetooth enabled terminal devices.
