Oki and Fujitsu Establish New Mobile Telecommunications Systems Company

Tokyo, Japan. Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited announced today that they have set up a joint venture company called Mobile Techno Corporation to develop hardware and software for International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000)-compatible mobile telecommunications systems. The new company, in which Oki has 65% ownership and Fujitsu 35%, will focus on planning, analysis, design and development of next-generation mobile telecommunications systems.

Mobile Techno will initially work on developing infrastructure systems for IMT-2000 standard base stations, but eventually will expand its scope to a wide range of development work for mobile telecommunications systems. During the next few years, the new company will concentrate on developing commercially viable IMT-2000 products as well as enhancing performance and expanding options. Subsequently, the company plans to develop IMT-2000-derived products, including wireless communications systems for commercial users and WLL (Wireless Local Loop) systems.

Oki and Fujitsu have jointly developed an experimental cdma2000 base station for DDI/IDO, which has been favorably evaluated by the Japanese telecommunications group. The new joint venture will enable the launch of IMT-2000 standard products more quickly and efficiently on a global basis. Moreover, Oki and Fujitsu will use the new venture as a platform for exploration of further possibilities for cooperation in the mobile communications business. Mobile Techno Corporation is targeting first-year sales of 2 billion yen.
