LumiLeds Lighting Introduces Neon Replacement Solution for Channel Letter Lighting Using LEDs

New LED Rail Offers Easier Installation, Safer Operation, and Ruggedness Superior to Neon

San Jose, CA. LumiLeds Lighting today announced a revolutionary product for channel letter lighting that will replace neon as the primary lighting source in channel letter lighting.

The LED Rail comprises a string of LEDs (light emitting diodes) mounted on a patented rail system(1) which allows for easy installation in standard channel letter housings. The LEDs are spaced such that they backlight the channel letter in a consistent manner. This is among the first solid state lighting products on the market designed exclusively for channel letter lighting.

Better than Neon

Because the LED Rail uses solid state lighting, it has many advantages over neon lighting for channel letters. First, it contains no glass tubes. The LED Rail is simply a string of wire with LED modules clinched on in fixed intervals. Glass is a constant nightmare for many sign companies due to breakage caused by harsh weather, transportation, and vandalism.

Second, the LED Rail operates at 24volts as opposed to the much higher voltages of neon. This "safe" operating voltage gives sign installers and building owners the comfort that their signs won t be causing fires. Third, the LED Rail is easy to install. There is no glass to bend. Simply roll out the LED Rail and attach to the channel letter housing base. Finally, connect to the LED Rail power supply. Installation complete! Lastly, the LED Rail saves energy. Up to 80% over the same size neon-powered channel letters.

"This technology will replace neon in channel letters," says Martin Schoeppler, Signage and Contour Business Unit Manager at LumiLeds Lighting. "The LED Rail system offers so many advantages to sign installers and building owners, it s only a matter of time", he states.

The LED Rail product is the result of leveraging the strengths of LumiLeds LED technology with Philips Lighting Electronics and Gear technology. The LED technology used in the LED Rail has been around for many years. LumiLeds Lighting has been a leader in the technology, and has established a large base of proven LED solutions, including automotive lighting and traffic signaling. The power supply system for the LED Rail was developed by Philips Lighting Electronics and Gear. Philips Lighting has long been the leader in lighting, and their Electronics and Gear division produces lighting driver modules such as transformers, ballasts, and LED driver modules.

The LED Rail is currently available in Red, with additional colors available later this year. The product offers two different mounting options allowing installers to quickly and easily mount the LEDs to the channel letter housings. The cost of the LED Rail $33-$50/meter ($10-$15/ft) depending on volumes.

LumiLeds Lighting is a leader in solid state lighting, offering numerous products for the Signage and Contour lighting market including the ChipStrip and LED Rail product families.
