Boston Laser Inc. acquires Polaroid's laser diode business
Laser diodes are semiconductor devices that provide an extremely concentrated and bright source of visible and infrared light for various applications, such as fiber optic communications, optical memory, medicine, printing and general industry.
Boston Laser was recently formed by Aharon Meytahl, who founded companies engaged in computer software, power electronics and electronic manufacturing. Boston Laser specializes in high-brightness, high-power laser diode systems.
Polaroid is a leading developer and manufacturer of high-power semiconductor lasers. Originally developed for Polaroid s medical diagnostic imaging laser system, the lasers are offered in a wide variety of wavelengths, powers and package configurations.
"Our external customer base for laser diodes has been growing and we re pleased that Boston Laser plans to invest in developing it further. This sale supports our strategy of focusing on growing our core imaging business," said Robert S. Murray, vice president, Polaroid Corporation.
