Motorola Awarded a $33 Million HFC Transmission Electronics Order From Adelphia Communications Corporation

Fiber Transmission and Outside Plant Electronics Order Positions Motorola As A Key Supplier to Adelphia as It Upgrades Its Networks Nationally

New Orleans, LA. Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector today announced that Adelphia Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: ADLAC) has awarded a 10,000-mile commitment to supply fiber optic and RF transmission electronics. The commitment includes equipment that will be used by Adelphia to upgrade cable systems nationwide for advanced and interactive services and expanded bandwidth capabilities. Motorola will supply its OmniStar(R) optical headend platform, the BTN-2 series fiber-optic node platform, and its STARLINE(R) 2000 series of RF amplifiers taps and passives.

"Motorola is proud to be a leading supplier to Adelphia for broadband equipment," said G. Bickley Remmey, Sr. Vice President and General Manager of Motorola s Transmission Networks Systems (TNS) business unit. "Adelphia is aggressively upgrading its plant capability to provide leading-edge digital services, including high-speed data (Power Link), video-on-demand, and telephony. We consider Adelphia to be an important and strategic customer that has an eye on advanced network design that is flexible to scale with increasing penetration of advanced services."

Motorola s OmniStar Optical Headend Platform is a universal and modular transmission platform utilizing an Advanced Laser Module (ALM*). OmniStar is designed to deliver video, voice, and data over Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) broadband networks. It is the ideal solution for two-way broadband network applications where point-to-point or point-to-multipoint transmissions require high density and modular flexibility. All modules designed for this universal platform incorporate common features, such as "Plug-and-Play" operation, high module density, and remote monitoring and operation using Motorola s Headend Control Software (HCS).

Motorola will provide Adelphia with its GaAs Enhanced STARLINE 2000 Series of 870 MHz amplifiers. The system benefits of using GaAs MESFET hybrid technology include: improved distortion performance, higher compression point, lower noise figure, upgrades with reduced amplifier re-spacing, greater channel loading, greater reliability, lower installation costs, reduced maintenance due to fewer actives, and lower cost of ownership. Advanced capabilities common to all STARLINE 2000 products include 15 Ampere AC power passing capability, high-efficiency power supplies, and full configuration. All nodes and outdoor actives in the series are also capable of being monitored by Motorola s LIFELINE(TM) plant monitoring system. The BTN-2 node platform is an 870MHz, 15-amp, four-output device.

"Motorola BCS has been a leading supplier to Adelphia for many years," said Dan Liberatore, Sr. Vice President of Engineering at Adelphia. "We look to Motorola on a long-term basis to work with us to develop flexible solutions to meet our increasing demand for reliability and superior performance. As we continue our extensive nationwide upgrade program, it is important that we have reliable partners with advanced technology and the manufacturing capability to keep pace with our schedules."
