RF Micro Devices Opens Phoenix Design Center

Greensboro, NC. RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, today announced the opening of a new 6,000 sq. ft. engineering design center in the Phoenix, AZ area.

Located in Chandler, AZ, the new facility is staffed with senior design engineers and technicians developing state-of-the-art high-efficiency linear power amplifiers, Bluetooth circuits and other RFICs used in cellular and PCS telephones. The design center will feature engineering offices, fully equipped labs and CAD equipment. Designs will be manufactured using GaAs HBT (gallium arsenide heterojunction bipolar transistor), Si (silicon) and SiGe (silicon germanium) technologies.

"We are very happy to have these new members on the RFMD(TM) team," said Victor Steel, RFMD(TM) Power Amplifier product line director. "Our design centers allow us to leverage premier design talent from around the country helping us meet the increasing demand for new products from our customers."

David A. Norbury, president and chief executive officer, remarked, "The additional design capacity is critical for us to serve our growing customer base, and provides an opportunity for RFMD to capture even more design wins. Our customers require that we continually develop sophisticated applications in a variety of technologies -- GaAs HBT, Silicon bipolar and BiCMOS, Silicon Germanium and GaAs MESFET -- and this design center offers the ability to continue to do so."

Norbury noted that the new facility marks the fourth design center created by RF Micro Devices. In April 1999, the company opened a design center in Scotts Valley, CA, followed by a second in Cedar Rapids, IA in June 1999, and a third in Boston, MA in October 1999.

RF Micro Devices, Inc., an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer, designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary RFICs for wireless communications applications such as cellular and PCS phones, cordless phones, wireless LANs, wireless local loop handsets, industrial radios, wireless security systems and remote meter readers. The Company offers a broad array of products -- including amplifiers, mixers, modulators/demodulators, and single-chip receivers, transmitters and transceivers -- representing a substantial majority of the RFICs required in wireless subscriber equipment. The Company s strategy is to focus on wireless markets by offering a broad range of standard and custom-designed RFICs in order to position itself as a "one-stop" solution for its customers RFIC needs. RF Micro Devices, Inc. is traded on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol RFMD.
