Vitesse Introduces Industry's Only 3.2Gb/s Laser Driver

Targets 10Gb Ethernet, SONET/SDH OC-48 and Fibre Channel Applications with Low Cost Integrated Circuit

Camarillo, CA. Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:VTSS) today introduced the VSC7928 -- the industry s only 3.2Gb/s diode laser driver targeted at next generation 10Gb/s Ethernet, SONET/SDH OC-48, Fibre Channel, and DWDM equipment manufacturers. With a maximum modulation current of 100mA, the VSC7928 can be matched to a wide variety of laser diodes. On-chip selectable data reclocking provides a simple way to achieve margin in the data eye by reduction of the jitter in the input datastream. The VSC7928 s short rise and fall times result in the best dispersion penalty for short and intermediate, as well as long reach fiber communications. The low power dissipation makes it possible to utilize four VSC7928 s to implement Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) or quad modules for the developing 10Gb/s Ethernet market. Some of the critical specifications of the VSC7928 include 20%-80% rise and fall times of less than 80ps typical, very low jitter of 3ps RMS, dissipation of only 400mW and requires a single 5V power supply. The controls for the laser bias and modulation currents of the VSC7928 are directly accessible to external circuitry. The VSC7928 also provides a separate data density monitor for RZ/NRZ applications providing the system engineer with design flexibility for implementation of link monitoring and loop back functions.

"The designers of new communications equipment need to optimize a fiber s capability by having a longer module reach, excess margin on the data eye opening, and a low dispersion penalty. The VSC7928 provides this and more in a low cost package (or die form), that is guaranteed to run at today s higher required temperatures," stated Ray Milano, vice president of optoelectronic products at Vitesse. "Thorough testing at the maximum operating temperature insures that users will be able to maximize the yield of their module and board assemblies," concluded Milano. Production quantities of the VSC7928 are available now in 32TQFP plastic packages, 24QFP metal-glass packages or bare die form, offering the system designer a significant amount of flexibility. Pricing of the VSC7928 in a plastic package is less than $30 in quantities of 10,000.
