LumiLeds Lighting LED Technology in Two New Automotive Prototypes

Two new prototypes using LumiLeds Lighting´s LED technology were unveiled during the 68th Auto trade show in Turin at the beginning of June

Turin, Italy. The first concept car was created by the renowned prototype maker, the Stola Group and designed by Marcello Gandini. LumiLeds Lighting have used a completely new technological approach in the rear end lighting of this concept car - indirect lighting using the newest generation of SMT High Power LEDs.

For the front end lighting LumiLeds have used white light high power LED prototypes to build a low beam "concept" and an integrated turn light using the same technology for the amber color. This is the second occasion that LumiLeds - previously known as Hewlett Packard Automotive Lighting - has implemented white light using semiconductor technology in a concept car: the Bertone Alfa Romeo Bella was unveiled at the Geneva International show in 1998.

The second prototype using LumiLeds technology unveiled last week is the Pininfarina "Rossa" concept car. The vehicle´s stylist, Mr. Ken Okuyama has chosen a new innovative way of using LED technology. The LEDs in the rear combination lights are both aesthetic and clearly visible to the naked eye.

Contrary to the Stola prototype, Pininfarina has used a wide variety of LED technologies in their concept car, ranging from small SMT LEDs for interior lighting to the latest generation of unreleased High Flux packages.

These two latest prototypes demonstrate once more LumiLeds Lighting´s willingness to help designers style the faces of the cars in the new millenium. LumiLeds Lighting´s LED technology keeps cost factors within reasonable budgets for the possible next production car series.

The importance of prototypes within the automobile industry was emphasised during the VIP Designers´ Night, which took place on 8th June parallel to the auto trade show in Turin. Approx. 400 VIP designers from all over the world participated in this event, which takes place every two years, in order to discuss major developments within the automotive world - this year sponsored by LumiLeds Lighting.

LumiLeds Lighting´s Worldwide Sales and Marketing Manager and Vice President, Mr. Wolfgang Medenwald took the stage together with 5 highly renowned car designers, among them Patrick Le Quement, Verene Kloos, Ken Okuyama, to emphasise the impact LumiLeds Lighting´s LED technology is having on the design of future cars.

As Medenwald emphasised, "LumiLeds Lighting can provide all car designers with additional flexibility and can enable them to be creative with new light sources. Our LED technology has a great role to play in the future of automotive lighting. With recent developments, costs of the brightest LED are comparable to existing light sources"
