ExceLight Communications Spins Off From Sumitomo Electric Lightwave

Offers Optical Modules and Devices for Communications and Networking Systems

Research Triangle Park, NC. Sumitomo Electric Industries has spun off its electro-optic products group from Sumitomo Electric Lightwave into a separate company, called ExceLight Communications, Inc.

"ExceLight now has the flexibility needed to best meet the demands of the North American optical communications market," said Yuji Hamasaki, President and CEO of ExceLight. "Our mission is to provide high-quality products with superb customer service, offering excellent fiber optic system solutions to our customers."

A wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries, ExceLight offers high-performance active and passive optical components and subsystems for public and private networking. Its clients include telecommunications, cable TV and broadband equipment providers. Its structure enables the company to serve not only the largest OEMs, but also smaller companies and startups.

Product lines include industry-leading 1480-nm pump lasers for fiber amplifiers, high-performance DWDM signal lasers, photodiodes, and state-of-the-art data links for SONET/SDH, ATM, and Gigabit Ethernet applications. A range of passive products includes wavelength-division multiplexes, optical add/drop modules, couplers, splitters, filters, and fiber Bragg gratings.

ExceLight is led by a management team with deep experience in optical communications. Mr. Yuji Hamasaki, President and CEO, joined Sumitomo Electric after receiving a master s degree in electrical engineering from University of Tokyo. He was very active in defining communication component specifications with the FDDI standards committee and has held various engineering and marketing management positions in both Japan and the United States while with Sumitomo Electric. Before taking the helm at ExceLight, he most recently was a general manager in Japan developing digital communication systems for cable industry and telecommunication providers.

Mr. Tim Yamada, Manager of Business Planning and Technical Operations, began working in optical transmission at Sumitomo Electric after receiving a degree in electrical telecommunications from Waseda University. After further experience as a senior engineer in charge of developing optical devices and data links, Mr. Yamada joined Sumitomo Electric Lightwave in 1999 in his current position.

Mr. Ed Miskovic, Director of Marketing, was a marketing director for Sumitomo Electric Lightwave. With a degree in physics from John Carroll University and graduate work in optical communications at San Diego State University, Mr. Miskovic brings over 25 years experience to fiber optics in corporate management, business development, component and system engineering, research and development, and sales and marketing. Previous to his position at Sumitomo Electric, he founded Optic Logic Corporation, which manufactured the first commercially available diode laser reliability test system. Mr. Miskovic also served as a product marketing director at E-Tek Dynamics.

Sumitomo Electric Industries is a global supplier of high-technology products to the communications, electronics, energy, automotive, and materials industries. With over 200 subsidiaries and affiliated companies worldwide, Sumitomo Electric Industries had sales of $13 billion last year.

Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Corp. will continue to serve the telecommunication, CATV, broadband, and data communications markets as a supplier of optical fiber cable, connectors, cable assemblies, fusion splicers, and premises cabling systems.
