Alcatel Optronics Division delivers first tunable, wavelength-locked lasers

Paris. Alcatel Optronics today announced it has delivered to customers the first samples of a 4-wavelength tunable laser with wavelength locking.

As bandwidth requirements escalate, system manufacturers boost channel density in WDM systems by reducing the channel spacing from 100GHz to 50GHz. To ensure D-WDM transmission performances over time compliant with ITU-T Recommendations, the wavelength of the transmitter must be monitored and locked. Alcatel s new lasers offer telecommunication equipment manufacturers space and cost savings on transmitter boards compared to the use of lasers requiring external wavelength monitors.

This wavelength locking function is a new technology building block integrated into the new Alcatel 1946 LMM (2.5Gb/s Electro-Absorption Integrated Laser), Alcatel 1945 LMM (10Gb/s Electro-Absorption Integrated Laser Modulator), Alcatel 1945LMI (2.5Gb/s DFB laser), and the Alcatel 1935 LMI (CW DFB laser). The lasers provide up to 30mW of output power.

The possibility to tune the same laser to one of 4 different wavelengths makes inventory reduction possible for multi-channel system operators, lowering inventory levels & cost. All products are designed to be compatible for use for 50GHz spacing DWDM applications

The package and pin-out of the new products stay compatible with the previous series. "This allows our customers to take advantage of these new features without a complete redesign of existing boards, not only reducing their cost but more importantly shortening time to market for next generation equipment" said Philippe Bregi, Optronics COO.
