RF Micro Devices Introduces GaAs HBT Direct Quadrature Modulator

Source: RFMD

Low-Cost Integrated Circuit Features Excellent Linearity, Noise Floor and Over-Temp Carrier Suppression

.

Greensboro, NC. RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, announced today the introduction of the RF2480 -- a monolithic direct quadrature modulator IC capable of universal direct modulation for complex modulation formats supporting a variety of wireless applications.

Typical applications for the device include CDMA, TDMA/EDGE, GSM/EDGE, and W-CDMA base stations, WLAN systems and fixed wireless systems. The device accommodates GMSK, QPSK, 8PSK, DQPSK and QAM modulation formats.

Offering pin-to-pin compatibility, the RF2480 provides enhanced carrier suppression over temperature and increased linearity over supply voltage when compared to the RF2422, the company s preeminent direct quadrature modulator. "We believe these key performance enhancements solidify RF Micro Devices position as the leading supplier of direct modulators for base stations and other wireless applications," said Brent Wilkins, TDMA marketing manager for the RFMD(TM) Digital Cellular product line.

Operating from a single 5V power supply, the RF2480 offers greater than 35dBc/Hz carrier suppression over its operating temperature range. The IC implements a differential modulator, limiting amplifiers, a summing amplifier and an output RF amplifier to drive 50(OMEGA) from 800MHz-2500MHz. RF Micro Devices uses careful component matching to obtain excellent amplitude balance and phase accuracy. Manufactured using an advanced gallium arsenide (GaAs) HBT process technology, the RF2480 is offered in an SOP-16 package. The component is ready for immediate shipment from RF Micro Devices, priced at $6.74 in order quantities of 10,000 or more. Fully assembled evaluation boards are also available.

RF Micro Devices, Inc., an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer, designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary RFICs for wireless communications applications such as cellular and PCS phones, cordless phones, wireless LANs, wireless local loop handsets, industrial radios, wireless security systems and remote meter readers.

The company offers a broad array of products -- including amplifiers, mixers, modulators/demodulators, and single-chip receivers, transmitters and transceivers -- representing a substantial majority of the RFICs required in wireless subscriber equipment. The company s strategy is to focus on wireless markets by offering a broad range of standard and custom-designed RFICs in order to position itself as a "one-stop" solution for its customers RFIC needs. RF Micro Devices, Inc. is traded on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol RFMD.
