Sumitomo Electric Industries Announces $350 Million Program

Durham, NC. ExceLight Communications is strengthening its portfolio of active, passive and optical data link components for the rapidly expanding WDM market, thanks to an aggressive 35-billion-yen (approximately $350 million) technology investment by parent Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI).

SEI s program focuses on increased production capacity and the introduction of next-generation active and passive products. SEI plans to boost production capacity for optical components, high-performance WDM fiber and other related optical technologies from two to five times by 2002. In addition, SEI is targeting key areas of WDM technology for new products, including new, high power 1480nm pump lasers for Raman amplifiers with integrated wavelength-stabilizing fiber Bragg gratings, OC-48 & OC-192 optical transponders, optical subsystems.

"Our customers will directly benefit from this investment," said Yuji Hamasaki, president and CEO at ExceLight. "With the explosive growth in demand for high-speed optical communication networks, ExceLight is positioned to supply components and value-added assemblies that combine leading-edge technology with the reliability and cost-effectiveness that has long been a hallmark of Sumitomo."

ExceLight markets WDM components and subsystems for both the long-haul and emerging metro markets. "This new investment will help us meet our customer s critical time-to-market issues, as well as ensure we have the products for next-generation needs," noted Ed Miskovic, director of marketing for ExceLight.

SEI expects its global WDM-related sales to top 200-billion-yen ($2 billion) by 2002. The anticipated WDM market is 2-trillion-yen ($20 billion). The North American market served by ExceLight is by far the largest, accounting for 60% to 70% of global demand.
