Plasma Etch Company Positioned to Serve Exploding Telecom Market

PETALUMA, Calif. Tegal Corporation (Nasdaq:TGAL - news) today announced that Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (CSMC) has purchased a Tegal 6500 Series etch system and a 900 Series plasma etch system. The tools will be used for processing high performance III-V materials, such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) and indium phosphide (InP) for the wireless telecommunications market. The order, which marks the first business between Tegal and CSMC, is scheduled for installation in January at CSMC s facility in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

"With the exploding growth of the telecommunications market, particularly in the area of wireless communications, compound semiconductor manufacturers are continuing to expand capacity," said Jim McKibben, Tegal vice president of Worldwide Marketing and Sales. "Our patented dual frequency 6500 Series system allows Tegal to play an integral role in providing leading telecommunications manufacturers with the solutions they need to participate in this market."

Compound semiconductor or III-V materials are used to make many of the ICs for high-performance networks, data communications, cellular phones and other wireless telecommunication devices. According to CIBC World Markets, demand for wireless Internet-ready appliances and services is expected to fuel explosive growth for high bandwidth telecommunication ICs. This growth is also serving to fuel the market for production-capable etch systems, particularly those manufactured by Tegal.

Tegal s versatile model 6500 series meets all of the challenges for processing the difficult-to-etch materials used to fabricate today s broadband wireless devices. The 6500 Series is the system of choice for HBT mesa etch, via etch, and gold/platinum interconnect etch and many other processes required to fabricate high performance broadband ICs.

The companion 900 Series systems are widely recognized for their low cost of ownership and high-throughput. More than 1,300 of the 900 Series systems have been installed worldwide and are supported by an extensive worldwide parts and service organization. Adept at handling both round and square substrates, the 900 Series systems deliver highly reliable, repeatable results in etching a variety of films used to manufacture semiconductors, telecommunications and optoelectronic devices, flat panel displays and thin film magnetic heads.
