Appoints John H. Carosella as President of JMAR NanoLight

San Diego, CA. JMAR Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:JMAR), a provider of precision micro- and nanotechnology products, announced today the formation of the JMAR NanoLight(TM) Division in order to speed commercialization of the company s proprietary X-ray and related advanced optical technologies.

John H. Carosella, who joined JMAR in May of this year as managing director of its Advanced Light business area, has been named President of the new division, which will be located in the company s facilities in San Diego.

The mission of the NanoLight(TM) division will be to produce high-value commercial products from JMAR s leading-edge advanced light technologies that were developed during the past decade by JMAR Research Inc., the company s wholly-owned research and development subsidiary. Those technologies include JMAR s patented all-solid-state Britelight(TM) lasers, the PXS laser plasma X-ray sources now being refined for use in semiconductor lithography processes, and other advanced applications in the optical communications market.

JMAR s nanotechnology activities currently range from the development of one-nanometer wavelength X-ray sources for a variety of micro- and nanotechnology uses, to the manufacture and sale of its Atomic Vision(TM) line of precision metrology products which utilize atomic force microscopes to provide high-tech manufacturers and research laboratories with sub-nanometer imaging capabilities.

Initially, JMAR NanoLight s(TM) activities will concentrate on applying the company s leading-edge advanced light source technology to produce high-performance compact X-ray sources for both silicon and gallium arsenide semiconductor lithography. JMAR is also evaluating the feasibility of marketing high-precision metrology products to the biomedical, semiconductor and genomics research industries based on the integration of a variety of unique X-ray sources, including those available from JMAR s alliance partners, with the company s established precision measurement and positioning products.

Carosella joined JMAR in May of this year, after serving for three years as president of Michigan-based Osmic Inc., a developer and provider of advanced X-ray and neutron optical instruments and products for the analytical instrument and semiconductor lithography equipment markets. Under his leadership, Osmic was reorganized, new products were introduced and sales more than doubled.

Carosella previously served for nine years as president of Speedring Systems Inc., a precision systems manufacturer located in Michigan and for more than 10 years with Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, N.Y. as an optical products development engineer and manager of an engineering services organization. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts and a Master of Science degree in Optical Engineering from the University of Rochester in New York.

JMAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John S. Martinez, Ph.D., said that he expects the new division to greatly enhance JMAR s ability to expedite the transition of its newly-created light-based technologies into commercially viable products. "At JMAR, the central objective of research is to create commercially-viable products, and I m very pleased to say that our efforts over the years have yielded some very exciting new technologies," he said. "However, even the most promising technology must first be refined and properly packaged in order to have the greatest impact in the marketplace. By creating NanoLight,(TM) and by placing a historically successful executive like John Carosella in charge of it, I believe we ll be giving our new millennium X-ray technologies the best chance possible to maximize returns on JMAR s investment in them."

"The creation of NanoLight(TM) underscores the great progress JMAR has made during recent years to bring more than a decade of intensive research by a team of truly visionary technologists from concept to completion," added Carosella. "My job, and that of the rest of the Nanolight(TM) team, is to take the cutting-edge technologies created by those scientists and get them to market. I m optimistic that we ll ultimately be highly successful in that endeavor." JMAR Technologies Inc., a semiconductor industry-focused company, is a leading developer of proprietary advanced light sources for high-value microelectronics manufacturing and metrology. It is also a fabless provider of high performance integrated circuits for the rapidly growing broadband telecommunications market and other microelectronics applications. In addition, JMAR manufactures precision measurement, positioning and optical-based manufacturing systems for inspection and repair of semiconductors and continues to play an important role in adapting its precision semiconductor manufacturing technology to the fabrication of advanced biomedical and optical communications products.

The statements regarding JMAR s expectations for the successful development and introduction of new x-ray and other advanced optical products and future sales and potential business opportunities are forward-looking statements based on current expectations that are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those set forth in the forward-looking statements. These risks include the failure of future orders to materialize as expected, delays in shipment or production, cancellation of orders, failure of acceptance of new products, failure of advanced technology and new intellectual property to perform as predicted, the failure of pending patents to be issued, and the other risks detailed in the company s Form 8-K filed on Feb. 15, 2000, its 1999 Form 10-K and other reports filed with the SEC.
