Laser industry booming: Strong demand for AIXTRON Multiwafer MOCVD Systems

Source: Aixtron

Aachen, Germany. Advances in laser diode manufacturing by MOCVD enable high bandwidth in data transmission of current and next generation fiber optic data transmission, which has become the backbone of booming worldwide information transfer. Established and new component manufacturers are rapidly building up laser production capacities in order to meet the increasing demand and to develop devices with improved performance. For example European based Optillion, Kista, Sweden, a newly founded start-up company, has just ordered an AIX 2400G3 and an AIX 200/4 multiwafer MOCVD system to produce and develop InGaAsP based laser structures.

Optillion was founded in December 1999 as a company developing and manufacturing fiber optic components. Optillion s CEO Patrik Evaldsson stated: "From our long experience we know that MOCVD is a key issue in our production concept. Thus it was very important for us to choose a reliable MOCVD platform with proven performance for InP/GaInAsP optoelectronic structures." Main advantages are the short production times, small footprint and low clean room area requirements and the high throughput available in different configurations.

Both the AIX 200/4 with a capacity of 3x2" and the AIX 2400G3 with a capacity of 8x2" or 8x3" are used in numerous research and production sites worldwide for the fabrication of InP based lasers, detectors and other optoelectronic devices. All relevant processes for any kind of application including selective area growth, planarization and growth of current blocking layers are feasible. The possibility to upgrade the AIX 2400G3 to a 12x3", 8x4" or 5x6" reactor ensures that it will also meet with future requirements on capacity expansion with lowest cost of ownership.

AIXTRON has installed over 400 systems worldwide and is represented in over 15 countries. The company provides an extensive service and support network for maintenance as well as upgrading of its systems. Among AIXTRON s list of further industrial clients are names such as Agilent/LumiLeds (subsidiary of Hewlett Packard), Alcatel, Anritsu, AXT, Epistar, Epitronics, EPSON, Honeywell, ITT, IQE (EPI), JDS-Uniphase, Kopin, Lucent, Mitsubishi Electric, Motorola, NEC, Nortel, Osram, Samsung, Showa Denko, Sumitomo Electric, Thomson, UEC, VPEC and numerous Japanese corporations. AIXTRON systems have also been installed in many of the world s most renowned research institutes including JPL, Sandia Nat. Lab., Fraunhofer Institute, ITRI-OES, CNRS. AIXTRON is very active in advancing MOCVD technology through collaborations and joint R&D projects with major partners worldwide.
