Traffic Signaling Suppliers LumiLeds Lighting and Swarco Futurit Start Far-Reaching Cooperation.

Swarco Futurit Will Assemble LED Signal Aspects for Lumileds and the Two Companies Will Joint Market in Europe, Middle-east, Africa

San Jose, CA. Fueled by increasingly demanding market requirements for both safety and economic performance, traffic signaling technology has become more advanced and complex over the last decade. As a consequence, the two market leaders in this industry have decided to join forces to leverage each other s competencies. LumiLeds, a Philips Lighting/Agilent joint venture, is the global leader in LED based traffic signals. It has a separate division committed to this technology and application. Swarco Futurit is one of the world s leading traffic signal unit manufacturers.

The first tangible proof of the agreement will be an entirely new, jointly developed LED based signaling product, especially designed for the European, Asian and South-American retrofit markets. Its major benefits are huge energy savings (up to 90 % lower electricity consumption if compared to conventional systems), and sharply lower maintenance costs due to a longer lifetime.

Moreover, the use of LED-based signals reduces the so-called phantom effect (visual disturbance caused by sunlight reflection, creating an "on" impression in an off-state) to an improved class 4 level. Thus, the new product also clearly outperforms conventional systems from a safety point of view. Its compliance with European CEN norms, its compatibility with most existing load switches and conflict monitors, and its physical shape which makes it fit into all existing signal housings make it a convenient and attractive retrofit option for much of the present European and Asian traffic signaling installed base. The product s rollout is scheduled for December 2000.
