Uniroyal Opens Facility, Announces New Products

Deecmber 11, 2000

Uniroyal Optoelectronics has opened its LED wafer foundry and fab in Tampa, Florida, after completion of a $35 million phase 1 building program, and has announced its first products. The highly automated facility is being used to manufacture InGaN-based blue and green LEDs, as well as red AlInGaP devices.
A second phase of construction, which will complete the build-out of the remaining 33,000 sq. ft. of the company s 77,000 sq.ft. facility, has already begun. This work includes expanding capacity for epitaxial, fabrication and testing processes as well as increasing the facility infrastructure and support. The new facility will have the capability to support approximately twenty new MOCVD reactors for the production of HB LEDs. Orders have been placed for reactors, with the first new system scheduled for delivery in January and an additional four reactors to arrive in the April to June time frame. The expansion, which is expected to be complete in mid-2001, also includes a research and development facility.

Uniroyal is now manufacturing InGaN-based LEDs on 2-inch sapphire wafers. These POWER-Ga(i)N (TM) devices are available as blue (450 and 470 nm), cyan (505 nm) and green (525 nm), and can achieve brightness levels of 1.5-2 mW for unencapsulated bare die at 20 mA.

At longer wavelengths, the company s AlInGaP devices are available in die or 3-inch epiwafer form. Red (626 nm) and red-orange (621 nm) LEDs are now in production, and other colors are expected by mid-year 2001. The POWER-BR(ite) ™ AlInGaP LEDs are grown on GaAs and use a buried DBR structure to prevent absorption by the substrate. Very high brightness exceeding 180 mcd has been achieved for unencapsulated bare die at 20 mA.

Uniroyal has also invested in specialized test equipment that is capable of providing known good die in high volume, a feature that the company believes is unique in the industry. Three levels of product are currently offered; these are whole undiced wafers (thinned or unthinned) that are sample tested; diced wafers that are either sample tested or 100% tested; and die that are 100% tested and sorted according to defined parameters.
