DTH Will Continue to Lead Cable in Digital Subscribers

Source: Cahners In-Stat Group

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. As digital video transmissions continue to replace analog transmissions, digital Direct To Home (DTH) and digital cable TV services are the largest competitors in the race to provide digital television services. According to high tech market research firm, Cahners In-Stat Group (http://www.instat.com), DTH will continue to outpace cable television over the next several years. By the end of 2004, there will be 95 million digital DBS subscribers and 48 million digital cable subscribers worldwide.

"While digital DTH has grown at a rapid pace since its inception in 1994, the cable TV industry has been prodded to digital technology by a slowdown in subscriber growth in recent years," says Mike Paxton, Senior Analyst with In-Stat s Multimedia Service. Digital signal transmissions allow operators to expand their channel lineups, offer video-on-demand, and provide digital music stations and interactive television. "These services create new sources of revenue for operators. However, the cost to implement digital technology is substantial for cable operators so system upgrades are occurring slowly and are often limited to a few wealthy countries." says Michelle Abraham, also a Senior Analyst with In-Stat s Multimedia Service. "Digital DTH on the other hand is available worldwide, either free to air or by subscription or both, except for countries where the equipment is banned." Over the next few years, the Asia-Pacific region promises the most rapid growth for digital DTH subscription services. In the digital cable realm, North America will see the greatest growth.

In-Stat also found:

- At the end of 2000, there were 36 million digital DBS subscribers and 11.7 million digital cable subscribers worldwide

- Digital DTH providers are introducing set top boxes with personal video recording capability to combat the threat of video-on-demand services from cable providers

- Since 1990, the number of worldwide cable TV subscribers has grown from 140 million to 280 million

The report, "Worldwide Digital Satellite & Cable TV Services," (MB0015SA) includes forecasts of digital DBS and digital cable subscribers by geographic region. It also features analysis of the digital TV markets and major service providers in over 40 countries.
