LumiLeds Lighting Announces Another Breakthrough in LED Performance

Highest Wallplug Efficiency Devices Ever Reported!

San Jose, CA. LumiLeds Lighting, the leader in high flux light emitting diodes (LEDs), today announced another breakthrough in its InGaN LED technology. These latest laboratory devices exhibit wallplug efficiencies of 25% at 425nm (250mA DC operation). The previous record reported in the industry was 22%. The new results are achieved in a high-power device which emits over 200mW of optical power, more than 10x the previous record of 17mW!

The design of these high-power LEDs enable operation at much higher current levels, with a demonstration of over 525mW of optical power at a current of 1A DC.

Wallplug efficiency (WPE) is a key measure for LEDs in lighting, as it reflects the true performance of the LED in real applications. WPE measures the optical output power of a device divided by electrical energy input. Other measures, such as External Quantum Efficiency (EQE) do not take into consideration the forward voltage of the device, and thus only reflect the good without subtracting the bad.

Highest Flux LEDs in the World!

"These are the most efficient, highest flux, large junction devices in the world," said Frank Steranka, materials R&D and product development manager. "Where the rest of the world is talking about 1 lumen devices, we are exhibiting up to 55 lumen devices in certain colors."

Enabling New Products

The significance of these breakthroughs is in the new markets and applications they enable. One example is backlighting for LCD computer monitors and LCD TVs. The LumiLeds high flux LEDs give these applications brighter colors than the conventional CCFL technology, and better power consumption than a CRT. And it s not even possible to use traditional 5mm LEDs in this application due to the light output needed.

Another application is the general signaling/lighting market such as flashlights. Until now, it was only possible to get a few lumens of light in a cm2 area. With the LumiLeds Power Light Source technology, it will be possible to get 25 to 50 lumens in the same physical area within the next year.
