KYMA EXPANDS BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO ACCOMMODATE GROWTH

Source: Kyma Technologies

Receives Phase II SBIR Funding for GaN Research

Research Triangle Park, N.C. Kyma Technologies, a developer and supplier of nitride substrates, has named RF Micro Devices (RFMD) Founder and current Chief Technical Officer William Pratt and Founder, former President and CEO of Integrated Silicon Systems (ISS) James Poitras to its Board of Directors.

In addition to expanding its Board of Directors to accommodate its rapid growth, Kyma Technologies has received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract for $750,000 to continue its large area GaN bulk crystal growth process research and development. The major benefit of developing a large area GaN substrate for device manufacturers is that they will then have four times as many die per wafer.

Prior to establishing RFMD in 1991, William Pratt held a range of technical management positions during his 15-year career with Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), including Division General Manager. In addition to bringing a solid business expertise of the electronics industry to Kyma Technologies, Pratt will provide technical leadership he gained as a primary designer of RFMDs initial product line, including the patented HBT Power Amplifier.

"Electronic industry professionals have been in search of a substrate on which to generate nitride-based devices for nearly a decade. Kyma Technologies groundbreaking research and development of 2 and 4-inch high purity GaN and AlN substrates marks a major turning point". Pratt stated. Working on the companys Board of Directors to optimize the technology s potential was an opportunity simply too exciting to walk away from.

Also named to Kyma technologies Board of Directors James Poitras was the founder of ISS, Inc. and has served as the Company s President, CEO and Chairman. Additionally, Poitras has 30 years of experience working in technology and business management for a variety of companies, including Corning, Analog Devices and General Electric.

"I am enthusiastic about playing a key role in driving the growth of Kyma Technologies and maximizing the tremendous potential its GaN and AlN substrates represent to the photonics, communications and semiconductor industries." Poitras said.

"We are excited to have two semiconductor veterans join our Board of Directors. They provide access and direction to achieve market objectives as a leader of nitrides technology," noted Ed Pupa, President and CEO, Kyma Technologies.

About Kyma Technologies:
Founded in 1998, Kyma Technologies is a market driven technology developer focused on aluminum nitride and gallium nitride solutions. Examples of GaN-based device applications that will be enhanced by the use of AlN and GaN substrates include short wavelength semiconductor lasers for high density optical storage, high brightness UV LEDs for solid state lighting, advanced high frequency communication components for wireless applications, and high power semiconductor devices for wireless infrastructure and radar applications

Since 1998, Kyma Technologies has expanded its development and manufacturing facilities to accommodate its rapid growth and is applying for additional contracts to support its research objectives, with a strong focus on gallium nitride as well as aluminum nitride.
