Princeton Lightwave Announces Industry's First Broadband GainChip for Tunable Lasers

Breaks barrier by offering highest power and broad tuning capabilities

Cranbury, NJ. Princeton Lightwave, Inc. (PLI), a leading provider of high performance active components, today announced its breakthrough Broadband GainChip™ (BGC), an Indium Phosphide-based semiconductor chip-on-carrier (CoC).

The BGC enables customers to reach more than 40 milliwatts from an external cavity network source laser. This breaks the barrier for customers to offer more than double the power that is currently available while simultaneously tuning over an entire band.

Until now, tunable laser approaches have typically provided either adequate fiber launch power or a broad tuning range, but not both in a practical format. PLI s design approach enables customers using external cavity lasers (ECLs) to offer a cost-competitive product that exceeds the required fiber launch power spanning an entire band, while simultaneously reducing the size of their product and the complexity of their manufacturing process. With power to spare, ECL customers have an attractive power budget, which allows them to reduce product design constraints for simplified packaging.

The BGC s unique characteristics include high power, a simplified chip design, a smaller package, and tuning over S, C and L bands within the external cavity.

"Collectively, these features enable our ECL customers to provide a cost-competitive, broadly tunable source laser that exceeds industry requirements," said John Connolly, Vice President of Engineering. "As a direct result, we anticipate an acceleration in the industry adoption of broadly tunable source lasers, and a corresponding increase in the market share that broadly tunable lasers claim from fixed and narrowly tunable source lasers."
