Vitesse Demonstrates OC-768 Capabilities at NFOEC

July 9, 2001

Camarillo, CA. Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Nasdaq:VTSS) this week is demonstrating its 40+Gb/s capabilities at NFOEC in Baltimore, Maryland (Booth No. 1413).

The voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) being demonstrated has been developed using Vitesse s proprietary Indium Phosphide (InP) process technology. The VCO is the most critical component in the development of an OC-768 chipset. It is used as a building block for the phase-locked-loops used in clock multipliers and clock recovery units that will be integrated into Vitesse s 40+Gb/s mux/demux chipset currently in design.

Vitesse s VCOs are operating in the lab and will soon be available to alpha customers. Fundamental oscillation is selected by design between 43GHz and 50GHz with a 10% tuning range. The VCO drives 50ohms with a 300mV p-p swing (-6dBm) and operates at very low power, 128mW, typical. Packaging is a proprietary design currently available with GPPO connectors. Complimentary clock outputs are supplied.

"This VCO is built in our 4-inch InP wafer fab located in Camarillo, Calif., using an internally developed InP HBT process. Vitesse has focused its InP effort on the development of a high-performance, high-yield, highly-manufacturable HBT process," stated Alan Huelsman, director of Vitesse s InP program.

"We are very pleased with the performance of this part as it demonstrates all the key features of our InP HBT process. Transmission lines, MIM capacitors, thin film resistors, and high performance multi-finger HBTs are all working as designed," concluded Huelsman.

Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation is a leading designer and supplier of innovative, high- performance integrated circuits (ICs) used in next generation networking and optical communications equipment. The company s products address the needs of Enterprise, Access, Metro, Core, and Optical Transport network equipment manufacturers who demand a robust combination of high speed, high service delivery and low power dissipation in their components In concert with its broad communications product portfolio, Vitesse also develops ICs for storage area networking and enclosure management. Vitesse is headquartered in Camarillo, Calif., and operates two fabrication facilities; one in Camarillo and one in Colorado Springs, Colo.
