KDF s Manufacturing Expertise Chosen to Support Industry-Proven Eclipse Sputtering Systems

July 10, 2001

Rockleigh, NJ. In a strategic outsourcing move, KDF has begun manufacturing physical vapor deposition (PVD) systems for Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL), one of the industry s largest suppliers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The outsourcing contract, which underscores KDF s expertise in manufacturing sputtering systems, covers the production of TEL s Eclipse(R) single-wafer PVD tool, the latest generation sputtering system in the Eclipse product line.

"KDF has more than 15 years of experience in building advanced, cost-effective PVD tools," said Kurt Flechsig, president of KDF. "The Eclipse is known as the workhorse tool of its class, and this agreement reflects TEL s confidence in KDF to maintain that reputation. By choosing KDF, TEL benefits from our PVD manufacturing expertise, ensuring consistent quality and process performance in the Eclipse."

TEL selected KDF to manufacture the Eclipse systems based on KDF s extensive experience with sputtering technologies. KDF produces the industry s most advanced, cost-effective in-line batch sputtering systems, and has a core ability to tailor its products to a broad variety of markets and applications. Building on this capability, KDF will use its proven manufacturing methods to produce the Eclipse, a single-wafer, high-volume PVD system used for front-end semiconductor applications.

The contract manufacturing deal marks the latest accord between TEL and KDF. In 1998, KDF acquired all of TEL s in-line batch PVD products and support personnel, a move that solidified KDF s position as the third largest supplier of in-line PVD equipment.

About Tokyo Electron Ltd. TEL, established in 1963, is a leading supplier of innovative semiconductor and LCD production equipment worldwide.
