Strategy Analytics: Millimetre-wave Set for Strong Growth

Source: Strategy Analytics

Automotive RADAR races ahead; weak reception for broadband wireless

London, UK. According to a study released by Strategy Analytics, the global consulting firm, GaAs device demand from millimetre-wave applications is forecast to grow from $530.1m in 2000 to $1920.9m in 2005, a CAAGR of 29%. Overall, transceiver shipments will grow from 1.09m shipments in 2000 to over 5m unit shipments in 2005.

These findings are presented in a study entitled "GaAs Device Demand from Millimetre-Wave Applications," and published by Strategy Analytics within its continuous information service, GaAs and High Speed Circuits Service.

"Automotive RADAR will become the fastest growing millimetre-wave market with demand for GaAs devices growing at a CAAGR of 99%" observed Asif Anwar, an analyst with the firm s GaAs and High Speed Circuits service. "The automotive RADAR market will grow in two stages based around 77GHz and 24GHz systems.

Satcomms and military markets will show steady growth and the terrestrial point-to-point market will represent the second largest millimetre-wave market. GaAs MMIC technology will become the technology of choice for millimetre-wave applications.

"Broadband wireless (point-to-multipoint) solutions such as LMDS are a disappointment. This sector is currently failing to compete effectively with cable modems and xDSL solutions and provide a cost competitive alternative." continued Anwar. "This sector is in dire need of a shake-up if it is to fulfil any promise. It still holds potential but the major players have to converge towards mutual standards for frequency and technology."

The report analyzes the frequency and systems trends and profiles the main system vendors for the respective applications. GaAs transceiver demand is discussed in the context of GaAs MMIC and GaAs discrete technology. A detailed demand model provides a comprehensive analysis of GaAs device demand. The Strategy Analytics report "MMIC Demand from Automotive RADAR Systems" provides further analysis on the automotive market.
