50,000-Square-Foot Building Includes Lab for Design and Test of Velocium s High-Performance Indium Phosphide Telecommunication Chips

El Segundo, CA. Velocium, TRW s telecommunication products company, opened a new headquarters building and product design laboratory today. The futuristic 50,000-square-foot facility, located in El Segundo, is only minutes away from TRW s recently completed production line for fabricating high-performance indium phosphide (InP) chips for telecommunications applications.

InP is a semiconductor material capable of operating at the high speeds needed to integrate optical and electronic functions. Velocium, formed in May, makes TRW s high-speed semiconductor technologies available to the fiber optic-based and broadband wireless telecommunications industries.

"The new headquarters demonstrates the growing emergence of Velocium as a TRW brand," said Dwight Streit, Velocium president. "We re bringing TRW s advanced technology to market just when the telecommunications industry is seeking the high-speed optoelectronic solutions possible with indium phosphide."

Velocium s 40-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) InP components position the company as a leader in the developing market for 40-Gbps fiber optic systems. At the same time, Velocium s high-speed gallium arsenide technology is helping the wireless telecom industry meet the rapidly growing demand for broadband equipment.

Velocium s InP promises improved performance for next-generation cellular phones. Velocium is currently working jointly with Hitachi to develop InP power amplifier modules for third-generation, or 3G, wireless communications -- wireless handheld devices that will support Internet access and high-speed data communications.

According to industry analysts, shipments of wireless handsets will exceed 700 million units by 2005. 3G wireless units, together with "2.5" G phones -- a "bridge" generation between cell phones and full-featured 3G -- are estimated to capture more than 50 percent of these shipments. All of the units will contain one or more power amplifier chips.

Velocium is part of TRW Space & Electronics, an operating unit of TRW Inc. TRW provides advanced technology products and services for the global aerospace, telecommunications, information systems and automotive markets. News releases about Velocium can be found on the Internet at www.velocium.com.
