Sumitomo Electric to Start Online Ordering System for Opto-electronics Packages

Source: Sumitomo Electric Industries

Osaka, Japan. Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. is pleased to announce it has started an online ordering service for semi-custom-order opto-electronics packages that aims to substantially shorten lead-times between designing and shipment, as well as reduce prices.

Sumitomo Electric has been a reputable manufacturer and supplier of opto-electronics packages for applications including transceivers, transmitters, receivers, modulators, SOA s, MUX/DeMUX and so on. These packages are key components in opto-electronics systems.

Usually, opto-electronic packages are custom-made, and manufactured in compliance with the specifications of individual customers. This custom-made system takes time before the design is fixed, as well as production lead-time. One month was required before shipment after our receipt of a P.O.

Today, the opto-electronics market is changing rapidly, and new product development is fierce. Our customers are eager to introduce their products to the market as soon as possible. Sumitomo Electric s new online ordering service aims to respond to such customer demands.

An opto-electronics package is generally composed of about ten parts. At the start of service, approximately three types of options are to be provided for each part so that a customer can make the best choice according to required characteristics and applications. The components available on the Internet order service will be all highly versatile, which are carefully selected based on Sumitomo Electric s precise study on the past sales experiences and current development trends. The parts will be suitable for 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps transceivers, transmitters, receivers and for pump lasers.

This new system will enable shipment in no more than two weeks, which is less than half the time of conventional product. Also, conventional custom-made new package samples were produced in small lots and therefore their prices were far apart from those of mass-manufactured products, but our new system allows the price level of mass-produced products. Moreover our products characteristics and reliability of the semi-custom products will be equal to those of the mass-produced products. Optional minor changes will be available at extra charges for those who want to tweak the packages characteristics.

You can place an order on Sumitomo Electric through the Internet. On the Sumitomo Electric corporate website, the drawings can be checked instantly by simply selecting the parts of choice. Upon our receipt of Web order form, Sumitomo Electric will send back quotations.

In some cases, thermal management design may be required. A suitable design will be verified and recommended to our customers by Sumitomo Electric.

Various optional parts are going to be added in response to other application and requirements.

This semi-custom-order package system is a patent-pending business model. For more information, please see the website at http://www.sei.co.jp/itc/index.htm
