TECSTAR and JX Crystals Reach 33.4% Cell Efficiency

Source: Tecstar Inc.

City Of Industry, CA. TECSTAR Inc. and JX Crystals Inc. have been working together to build a prototype module to demonstrate high efficiency achieved by mechanically stacking cells for the BMDO SBIR Phase II project.

Recent test reports confirm TECSTAR s space cell technology has successfully reached a 33.4% cell efficiency at 15AMO. The GaInP/GaAs cell made by TECSTAR is 27%, and GaSb made by JX Crystal is 6.4%.

"With the prismatic cover, the overall cell efficiency will be over 35%," stated Dr. Charlie Chu, Project Lead. "Given this latest data, TECSTAR and JX Crystals anticipates our next cell efficiency to reach over 40% within the next few months."

TECSTAR Inc. is a Compound Semiconductor company providing key enabling technologies to the Satellite Power and Optoelectronics industries. Key products include EPI for High Brightness LEDs, HBTs, VCSELs and other related compound semiconductor devices as well as solar cells, CICs and panels for satellite applications.

TECSTAR also operates divisions supporting the aircraft and spacecraft industries. Together, TECSTAR provides products worldwide and delivers to the major optoelectronics device manufacturers and all major satellite integrators.

JX Crystals Inc. is located in Issaquah, Wash., and its major focus is on Infrared Cell Technology. The foundation of the company is gallium antimonide (GaSb) photovoltaic cells, which respond to longer wavelength radiation than either traditional silicon cells or newer gallium arsenide cells. This new infrared cell is being used in thermophotovoltaic generators as well as the space solar application described above.

In thermophotovoltaic systems, photovoltaic cells respond to infrared radiation from a fuel-fired emitter, rather than the visible light energy from the sun. The company s expertise is in GaSb cell development and its plans are to continue developing these applications. JX Crystals sees tremendous potential in manufacturing its latest commercial products using its rapidly developing technology.
