New Single-mode VCSELs from Avalon Photonics

Avalon Photonics have just launched a new family of single-mode Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) with wavelengths of 759nm - 766nm, 790nm - 794nm and 850nm - 855nm through to 850nms. Specially designed for use in absorption spectroscopy, these VCSELs combine fundamental longitudinal mode operation with a wide mode - hop free tuning range.

The thickness of the active layer in a VCSEL determines its emission wavelength. The active region in the Avalon Photonics product is just one wavelength thick, which ensures that only one axial mode is supported in the cavity. This means the VCSEL operates in the fundamental longitudinal mode, which is highly desirable. Depending on the required wavelength regime, the active layer in the devices contains one or more quantum wells of GaAs, AlGaAs or InGaAs.

Designing VCSELs for use in absorption spectroscopy has been a specialist activity of the group prior to the foundation of Avalon Photonics Ltd. This took place from 1994 - January 2000, during that time the company, which is based in Zurich, developed an industry lead developing single-mode VCSEL under the CSEM (Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology SA) umbrella. Short wavelength single-mode VCSELs have many applications in sensing from medical analysis equipment, machine tools to spectroscopy as well as the telecom access market.

Avalon Photonic s mission is to establish for themselves and their products a reputation for outstanding quality and reliability. To this end reliability programmes have been running for as long as the company has been established. Whilst it is too early to predict longterm reliability for these single mode VCSELs a combination of new design, and improved processes is for the first time promising a design that will exceed customers expectations.

The product is available from sole worldwide distributors, Laser Components, and packaged in a TO46, or TO510 with peltier and thermistor elements for temperature control.

Avalon Photonics sees itself as revolutionizing the design and supply of Multi-Gigabit VCSELs and VCSEL arrays for serial and parallel fiber interconnects. Through the disciplines of innovative packaging, wafer level product development, and the continuous process of design improvement, it is also establishing a world wide reputation for its single-mode VCSELs.
