Lumics announces availability of 980 nm high-power pump lasers
The extremely stringent reliability requirements are achieved through careful design and a patent pending innovative technology. In addition, Lumics technology allows batch processing of large numbers of devices and straightforward scalability with high yield.
The laser chips on submount are compliant with the Telcordia as indicated by ongoing test results which meet the Bellcore GR-468 requirements. The Lumics pump lasers are available as bar, die or chip on submount, as well as in complete laser modules. The products will be displayed at the OFC trade show, booth No 440, in March 19-21st 2002.
The increasing demand for higher bandwidth of data transmission leads to an exponential growth of fiber optic networks, providing the backbone for the converging information society. Therefore the worldwide market for fiber optic components is estimated to grow significantly over the coming years, reaching more than $10 billion in 2005 (according to RHK reports, 2001). The recent downturn in the optical networking valuation and the slowdown in capital expenditures are expected to recover due to still exponentially growing bandwidth requirements.
About Lumics
Lumics, based in Berlin, is a start-up company aiming to be a technology leader in the fiber optic component market. The company was founded in Nov. 2000 by three well-recognized technology experts. Their experience includes various fields, such as laser device technology, vacuum technology as well as laser testing and qualification. Lumics received 3.3 mill. series A round funding in Dec. 2000 by Earlybird, a German private equity firm. The fast prototype demonstration and built up of the production line was possible through tight collaboration with the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (www.fbh-berlin.de) in Berlin.
The company is engaged in development and production of various kinds of pump laser devices devices especially 980nm pump lasers for EDFA, the enabling technology behind Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM).
Lumics unique selling proposition is a higher reliability, kink free power, thermal stability, and a narrower vertical far field as compared to most competing products. This is based on the unique technology including a special facet passivation as the key step in the production process, invented by Lumics.
