Cree introduces 525 nm green MegaBright LED for signage applications

Durham, NC. Cree, Inc. today introduced its newest MegaBright(TM) LED product, the 525 nm green device, which completes the MegaBright product family. This device exhibits typical brightness of 7 mW, an increase greater than two times the current UltraBright(TM) 525 nm green LED. Applications for this MegaBright green device will target full color indoor and outdoor displays including sports stadium and large advertising panels. The company is currently offering qualification samples, with volume production targeted this quarter. The company plans to offer this LED at prices comparable to the other MegaBright products offered by the company.

The use of high-brightness blue and green LEDs in full-color outdoor signs is a well-established market, and one of the primary applications for high brightness nitride LEDs. According to industry sources, high brightness LEDs will remain the light source of choice for outdoor full video display markets for the foreseeable future.

Chuck Swoboda, President and CEO of Cree stated, "We believe this new product will help expand existing applications and open up new opportunities in the signage market due to the increased brightness of the product. This product positions Cree to increase market share as we can now compete in the high performance market for green devices. We have made excellent progress in increasing brightness levels to expand applications utilizing LED technology and will continue to focus our efforts in this direction. Fran Barsky
