RFMD announces production shipments to major european handset manufacturer

RF Micro Devices, a leading provider of proprietary RFICs for wireless communications applications, announced today it has begun production shipments of the RF3108 PA module and the RF2416 LNA to a top-tier European handset OEM.

Production shipments have begun ramping and are expected to reach a multi-million dollar level this calendar year.

The recently introduced triple-band GSM handset is extremely small and lightweight and capable of providing up to 150 hours of standby time. It features wireless application protocol (WAP), enhanced messaging service and is compatible with GSM900/1800/1900 for international coverage.

Dave Norbury, president and CEO of RF Micro Devices, said, "We are pleased to provide this customer with our proprietary RF integrated circuits, and we look forward to supplying additional components into new handsets in the future.

"We are particularly pleased to announce that this handset contains not only our RF3108 PA module but also our RF2416 low noise amplifier, Norbury continued, "which marks our first volume shipments of small signal devices for a GSM application. As we stated recently on our quarterly conference call, our growth strategy in handsets focuses on two key goals - gaining market share in power amplifiers and expanding our footprint in the phone. This announcement illustrates our ability to successfully execute against both these goals.

The RF3108 is a GaAs HBT high-performance, triple-band GSM power amplifier module qualified for GPRS applications up to Class 12. It provides typical power added efficiencies of 55 percent for GSM900, 52 percent for DCS1800 and 47 percent for PCS1900. The RF3108 is offered in a small, cost-effective 9mm x 10mm package.

The RF2416 is a GaAs HBT dual-band LNA with bypass switch designed for use as a front end for 950 MHz GSM and DCS1800/PCS1900 applications. The low noise, high linearity integrated circuit has a selectable gain feature, which enables a step reduction in system gain, adding flexibility in meeting the overall system s gain control requirements. The RF2416 is offered in a 3mm x 3mm 12-pin leadless plastic package.
