Rohm donates $2.5 million to LED research center at UCSB
Rohm Co. is to make a $2.5 million contribution to the Solid State Lighting and Display Center (SSLDC) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Headed by Professor Shuji Nakamura, who is known for his work in the development of blue LEDs, the SSLDC aims to develop within five years a white lamp for illumination that lasts longer and uses less energy than conventional fluorescent lamps. Rohm s contribution will support research into GaN-based devices that are brighter than current blue LEDs.
The SSLDC has received donations from other corporate benefactors, including Mitsubishi Chemical and Cree. In September 2000, Cree pledged $1.2 million toward the endowment of the Cree Chair at the SSLDC and to support research in the field of GaN-based electronic materials and devices ( Cree Announces $1.2 Million Gift to University of California, Santa Barbara). Nakamura was named the inaugural recipient of the Cree Chair in September 2001 (Shuji Nakamura Named Recipient of the Cree Chair at UCSB s Center for Solid State Lighting and Displays).
