Taiwanese foundries report progress (Asia News)
Global Communication Technology (GCT), one of Taiwan s new GaAs foundries, has raised an additional NT$750 million ($22 million) in capital, bringing its total funding to NT$2.2 billion ($64 million). Around half of the new funds will be used to buy equipment for GCT s GaAs operation, with a quarter each going to production of arrayed waveguide gratings and surface acoustic wave filters. Another GaAs foundry in Taiwan, Suntek, has completed pilot production of 4 inch AlGaAs HBT wafers using technology transferred from Mitsubishi. Mass production will begin in October at an initial rate of 1000 wafers per month, rising to 5000 wafers per month at full capacity. The company also has plans to build a 6 inch fabrication facility (see Compound Semiconductor May 2001, p76), and is developing InGaP HBTs and other technologies.
