Automotive radar drives mm-wave growth (Market News)
According to a forecast released by Strategy Analytics, GaAs device demand from millimeter-wave applications will more than triple over the next five years. The market will grow from $530 million in 2000 to nearly $1.92 billion in 2005. Overall, transceiver shipments will grow from 1 million units to over 5 million units in 2005. "Automotive radar based on 77 and 24 GHz will become the fastest growing market with a CAGR of 99%," said analyst Asif Anwar. Satcom and military markets are expected to show steady growth and the terrestrial point-to-point market will represent the second-largest millimeter-wave market. "Broadband wireless (point-to-multipoint) solutions such as LMDS are currently failing to compete with cable modems and xDSL solutions and provide a cost-competitive alternative," Anwar continued. "This sector still holds potential but the major players have to converge on mutual standards for frequency and technology."
