Sharp develops 33.66% efficient tandem solar module

Conversion efficiency is world's highest in a stacked solar cell module

Japanese firm Sharp, working under the Research and Development Project for Mobile Solar Cells sponsored by NEDO, has achieved the world's highest conversion efficiency of 33.66 percent in a stacked solar cell module.

The conversion efficiency of this module breaks the previous world record of 32.65 percent, which Sharp achieved under a NEDO project in 2022.

The module combines a tandem double-junction solar cell module with indium/gallium/phosphide as the top layer and GaAs as the bottom layer, and a silicon solar cell module. The thickness of the tandem double-junction solar cells can be reduced to less than one-third that of conventional triple-junction solar cells, according to Sharp,

The company is working on further increasing the efficiency and reducing the cost of PV modules, with a view to installing them in electric vehicles and mobile equipment as well as in the aerospace and aviation.
