Alpha Announces Unique Family of Advanced PHEMT Switches for Wireless Handsets; High-Power Switches Don't Need Negative Voltage

WOBURN, MA. Alpha Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:AHAA) has introduced the first four members of a ground-breaking family of gallium arsenide (GaAs) PHEMT RF IC switches, for use in wireless telephone handsets and other wireless applications. These are the only high-power, high-linearity RF IC switches on the market that do not need a negative voltage connection, simplifying circuit board design and reducing the cost of implementation.

The new switch family includes the AS190-73, AS191-73, both SPDT, and the AS166-300, AS189-300, both SP4T. Other products are under development to meet customer demand.

"Alpha now offers the most advanced RF IC switches on the market," said Dave Fryklund, Alpha s Director for RF IC Products. "They are the first to combine all of the most desirable features in a single IC. They need only a low positive voltage (0 to 2.75V); they handle high power (up to 4 watts) with linearity that exceeds the most exacting standards for digital handsets; and they have extremely low insertion loss. They are made on Alpha s proprietary GaAs PHEMT (pseudo-heterojunction electron mobility transistor) process.

"The major wireless handset OEMs have reacted very enthusiastically to samples of these new switches, and we expect to be in volume production in the September 2000 quarter. This new product family will reinforce Alpha s standing as the leader in control RF ICs and will convert more handset OEMs to the use of our GaAs IC switches. We expect this switch technology to become the industry standard."

Alpha Industries designs and manufactures a broad range of products for microwave and radio frequency wireless communications applications. The Wireless Semiconductor segment provides gallium arsenide (GaAs) integrated circuits and other semiconductors to the dynamic global market for wireless telephone handsets. The Application Specific Products (ASP) segment provides a broad range of GaAs and silicon devices to satellite, instrumentation, defense and other communications markets.
